Come Up Seven LogoThis is the logo for my clothing company that I co-own with my homie, Mitch. We started Come Up Seven in the Spring of 2009. The logo represents the lifestyle brand we have created, one of bicycles, motorcycles, cars, cocktails, and an appreciative nod to all things “old timey”. I also designed most of the front end styling over at our website, comeupseven.com, though I can’t take full credit for that, as it is based on an existing theme. I also designed all of the products in The Shop as well. |
The College Inn LogoI had been wanting to use a Fleur-de-lis in a logo for a very long time, so when The College Inn came along needing a logo, and the symbol matched the identity we were after, I jumped at it like a donkey on a waffle. The College Inn was built in 1909, and boasts “old world European-style lodging.” I went with a shield in an effort to exude safety and security, and a color scheme that exuded regality and modernized the typical brown and beige of the Tudor-style architecture. |
Ruffled Feathers LogoRuffled Feathers Premium Whiskey is a distiller located in Hood River, OR. The client came to me with a name and gave me complete control over the creative direction, as he trusted my knowledge of the product he was to be producing. In keeping with the emotions and sensations involved in drinking whiskey, I chose a distressed, dark, dirty and fun aesthetic. The mark stands apart from most other whiskey labels, and represents a company catering not to the gentleman who asks for the rocks, but rather the whiskey drinker who asks for the bottle. |
Bella Bliss Boutique LogoBella Bliss Boutique is a company in Hood River, OR specializing in stationary and the like; invitations, thank you cards, stationary, that sort of thing. The client came to me with a very distinct idea of what they wanted as far as a color palette, and then turned me loose to nail down the style. I went with a pragmatically cute mark; a functional cupcake if you will. Combined with a retro visual language on the web and in print, Bella Bliss Boutique has established itself as a solid source for everything correspondence related. I’m in the process of building the web site, over at bellablissboutique.com. |
DEC LogoDickinson Equipment Company is an air compressor distributor based out of Seattle, WA. In an industry full of wildly out-dated identity systems, the client was looking for a clean, modern take on the market. I created the three letters to be highly structured and rigid, alluding the heavy machinery DEC deals with. The mark speaks to the compression aspect of their product through the use of color saturation on the accompanying element, or as I dubbed it, the “pressure bar.” I also designed the DEC web site, decequipment.com. |
Chai House LogoChai House, a coffee shop in Ballard, WA that’s full of personality, was looking for a mark; a cozy mark. Something that spoke to comfy couches, big bistro mugs, and good people. The imagery of those big over-sized cute mugs was too good to resist, so I made the logo out of one. I chose the red color because while it is bright enough to match the personality of the shop, it is enough of an Earth tone to coincide with the shop’s vegan sensibility. |
Shift LogoThis spec work was designed for SHIFT, a Portland based bicycle community that focuses on teaching the community that making a shift to bicycle riding instead of driving can be done without drastically altering one’s lifestyle. With that in mind, I decided to flip the ‘F’ in SHIFT, thus making an alteration but not changing the overall function of the word, further showing that change doesn’t have to be a terrible thing. I chose a big ol’ slab-serif typeface, as the those chunky serifs reminded me of the teeth on a bicycle’s chain ring. The rest of the identity makes good use of thin dotted lines, speaking to the rhythm and sound a bicycle makes; tick tick tick tick tick. With the mark and accompanying identity, I also designed a full standards manual. |
Seattle Laundry Service LogoWhen the Seattle Laundry Service approached me to design their logo, they were less interested in branding their name, and more concerned with the word “laundry.” They wanted something that would get straight to the point on an exterior sign, or on the side of their service trucks. The direction I eventually landed on felt like a big colorful stamp, like someone slapped it up there, whatever ‘there’ may be, and we all thought that was fun. The Seattle Laundry Service web site, which I also designed, is right over here: universitylaundrycenter.com |
Old Timey Nike PostersNike was having an exhibit in an old timey movie theatre that had been converted for their use, and they needed some product posters styled after the same era as the building. I designed a poster for their Air Force One sneaker, and their Windrunner coat. |
My ThesisThis is the process book for my thesis from the Oregon State University design program. My thesis was an analytical approach to branding, and how we as individuals brand ourselves in various situations and interactions throughout our lives. By examining the correlations between corporate branding and personal branding, I was able to better understand branding as a whole. In studying the ways people alter themselves in different environments, I also learned a great deal about honesty and authenticity in design. |
Blackstar Album CoverThis was a hypothetical album cover I designed for the hip-hop duo, Blackstar. The CD and accordion-style liner notes fit into a square sleeve, all of which is based on vinyl record packaging rather than a plastic jewel case, as hop hop’s roots can be found on wax, and not on a compact disc. Blackstar is synonymous with New York, so I used two visual systems that establish solidarity with the Big Apple. All of the album track numbering uses a system based on NY’s subway signage, while the liner notes are decorated with city skylines made up of gritty photos from all around Brooklyn, Blackstar’s stomping ground borough. |
Enfield Wedding ProgramThis lovely couple came to me with a very specific style and visual language they were after to match their wedding location and ceremony. I had a lot of fun with this style, and it was nice having an excuse to play with all those different typefaces. |
Wildfire Menu SetWildfire is a 100% organic restaurant in Corvallis, OR that has some damned good wood-fired pizza. Amidst doing a remodel, they decided a re-branding was in order to accommodate their changes. Working collaboratively with three other designers, we created a new logotype and identity system, and designed a menu set for the restaurant. By creating four distinct menus, the various types of patrons would be given the menu that would best suit their dining experience; Appetizers and small treats, entrees, desserts, drinks, or a combination of them. The menus we’re printed on recycled paper, and have a very organic touch to them, fitting the restaurants ideals and aesthetic quite nicely. |
1 THING CFL Bulb Box[1 THING] is a Portland, OR sustainability initiative created by Entercom Communications. They were in need of a small gift and card to send to various businesses to garner interest in becoming a partner and/or sponsor of the program. I created a custom box for an energy-saving CFL bulb, as well as a card for adding a personal message for the recipient. |
Shopsins MenuHere we have a hypothetical re-design of a menu for Shopsin’s General Store, a NY restaurant that boasts over 900 items on its menu. A large part of this project was creating a grid structure and aesthetic that permitted enough variety to prevent the menu from looking like a novel. It was also important to incorporate a system for dealing with side dishes and custom options for the various menu items, of which there are a lot. Tons. |
Guide To The Fat BookThis is a book I made. It combines two pieces of literature, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and “Fat of the Land.” Visually, the two books act as separate voices interacting and conflicting with each other on the pages. I also bound the book myself. Like, all of it. I did that. Forgive me; I’m just still so ridiculously proud of that. |
Sex Ed PosterA theoretical poster for a PBS documentary, this poster approaches sexual education with a sense of humor and honesty that is normally entirely absent from formal education on sex in this country. |
